CHURCH OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY, SINGAPORE

THE CHURCH OF THE IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY (IHM)

A Parish community vibrant in prayer, steeped in God’s word, celebrating deeply the Sacraments and witnessing and proclaiming with enthusiasm the presence of Jesus in their midst.

The Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary (IHM) started as a chapel in 1953 to serve the Catholics of Serangoon 5th and 6th mile, and the Paya Lebar areas. In 1992, wings were added to the church which greatly increased the seating capacity to accommodate the growing parish. However, as the parish population increased over the decades to more than 6000, there was a pressing need to develop a new church building to cater to the growing Catholic population the church was serving. In 1999, the parish assembly approved plans to build a new church but insisted that the ‘kampong spirit’ of the church be retained, specifically – no high buildings. A Building Committee was promptly formed to start planning for the new church building. Separately, a Fund Raising Committee was formed to look into fund raising efforts to build the church . The whole church was developed at a cost of SGD 11.3 million and it has only one tall structure – the belfry.

Comprising Parish Priests, church staff & lay faithful, the Parish Pastoral Council (PPC) works together to build a vibrant, missionary & evangelistic church.

The PPC serves the parish by assessing & addressing pastoral concerns, organising events to support the needs of parishioners as well as ensuring that the church remains a place that all can call “home”. This is done through pondering and proposing practical conclusions on pastoral matters, such as faith formation and spirituality, whilst also taking into consideration the social and communal mission of the Church in reaching out to and serving the wider community.

The focus of PPC for 2021/23 is to build ‘Intentional Missionary Disciples’: for parishioners to continue to deepen their personal relationship with Jesus Christ and his Church and recognise the ways they can be witnesses to the faith in their daily lives. Key activities that have been planned to encourage our congregation to lead their lives as ‘Intentional Missionary Disciples’ are our Feast Day Triduum talks, Parish Discipleship Retreat, monthly Holy Hours and outreach events.

Another significant milestone the PPC has been working towards is the celebration of our parish’s 70th Anniversary. With the theme of ‘One in Heart’ (Phil 2:2) to commemorate our Platinum Jubilee, parishioners will be able to come together through various events as we foster deeper bonds and give thanks for the graces we have received throughout the years as one parish community.
